Emily Mason’s Stonington is included in “New York City Circa 1960: Works from the Collection of Robert A. Ellison, Jr.” at Schoelkopf Gallery.

Friends and contemporaries for decades, Mason and Robert Ellison belonged to the burgeoning community of creatives in New York City during the 1960s. This dynamic period in time marked the emergence of artist-run cooperatives known as the 10th Street Galleries.

Stonington is one of Mason’s early works using oil and pastel on paper, a prolific medium for her during the 1950s and 1960s. She would continue to engage with oils on paper in the following decades, creating dynamic, abstract compositions and continuing to push the boundaries of the material.

The exhibition will be on view until July 2, 2026.
