“An Attitude of Abstraction: The Life and Work of Alice Trumbull Mason”

On March 7th, 2026, the panel discussion “An Attitude of Abstraction: The Life and Work of Alice Trumbull Mason” took place at Hunter College’s Roosevelt House Auditorium. Moderated by Tom McGlynn, artist, writer, and Editor-at-Large for
The Brooklyn Rail, the discussion featured Will Heinrich, art writer for the New York Times; painter, sculptor and writer Thomas Micchelli; art historian and independent curator Dr. Barbara Stehle; and Cecily Kahn, artist, AAA member, and granddaughter of Alice Trumbull Mason.

Trumbull Mason was a key figure in the formation of the American Abstract Artist (AAA) group in 1936, and was dedicated to the organization throughout the rest of her life. She served as the AAA Treasurer in 1939, Secretary from 1940-1945, and President from 1959-1963.
